How individual writers
can now effectively compete
with the giants
of the publishing industry
by Dan Poynter
and Danny O. Snow
About the Book:
The publishing industry is transforming at the dawn of the 21st Century.
New technologies are revolutionizing the way writers deliver their work
to a vast worldwide audience.
With the explosion of the Internet, never before has it been possible for
writers to make their work so readily, and so directly, available to the
reading public. Increasingly, writers are discovering that they can publish
independently, without the time, effort and expense traditionally required
working with a conventional publisher or printer.
Thanks to new technologies, self-publishing is now a better option for
writers than at any time in history.
Instead of investing $10,000 or more for an old-fashioned press run of
thousands of books, writers can now self-publish their own books for
about one-tenth the cost. Using the best possible combination of electronic
and "print-on-demand" methods, self-published books can now be made available
to an estimated 50-70 million or more users of the Internet, plus in paperback from
more than 25,000 bookstores worldwide -- with nominal risk and expense.
New electronic media also make it possible to promote books at a fraction of
the cost of traditional methods. Yet time-honored principles for publicity
and marketing hold truer than ever, regardless of the medium used to
deliver the message.
"U-Publish.com" is intended to keep today's writers informed about the latest
technologies for publishing books independently, and about new - and proven -
methods to promote them.
The combination of leading-edge technologies and proven principles for
marketing and promotion offers writers the chance to compete effectively
with major publishing houses. For the first time in history, it is possible
for writers to bring their work more directly to readers around the world.
The effect of these developments will revolutionize the way books are published
in the new millennium.
About the Authors:
Dan Poynter is widely regarded as one of the world's foremost authorities
on self-publishing. He is the author of almost 80 books, many reports,
more than 500 magazine articles, nine audiotapes and two videotapes;
most of them on book writing, publishing and promoting. His seminars
have been featured on CNN, his books have covered by The Wall Street
Journal, and his story has appeared in U.S. News & World Report.
Danny O. Snow is a graduate of Harvard in English and American Literature
and Language. He has published more than 100 articles in newspapers and
magazines around the country, written screenplays for national
cable networks, and plans to soon publish a book of poems. From 1982-86, he served as
managing editor of University Publishing Corporation, before becoming
the youngest vice president in UPC's history. In 1988, he founded the
international research organization of Snow&Associates, which became
one of the first successful Web-based educational consortia. He joined
The 1stBooks Library in 1997, where he now serves as director of
